The authors compared treatment with MFU-V alone and in combination with HA fillers and found a statistically significant reduction in pore volume with both techniques.

Microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V; Ultherapy) used alone or in combination with a low-degree crosslinked hyaluronic acid filler (L-HA) can effectively reduce pore size, according to the outcomes of a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (August 5, 2021).

Authors Vasanop Vachiramon MD, MSc, et al, conducted a randomized, single-blinded, split-face study that included 46 subjects with enlarged facial pores. Each side of the face was randomly assigned to treatment with one session of MFU-V or combined MFU-V plus L-HA.

Pore volume was objectively measured by an Antera 3D system. Subjective assessment was evaluated by one blinded physician using a pore grading score (0–4). Patients rated their improvement using the visual analog scale (VAS, 0–10).

The mean pore volume of both sides declined with statistical significance at every visit compared to baseline, with the lowest mean seen at four months post-treatment. The combined technique showed a lower mean pore volume than single technique throughout the follow-ups.

Physician’s subjective evaluation showed no statistically significant difference between the two techniques. The patient satisfaction scores showed a statistically significant difference between the two side at four and six months post-treatment.

The authors concluded that both techniques effectively minimized enlarged facial pores. The combined technique resulted in higher patient satisfaction.
